My List of the Most Common AC Repair Troubles

Monday, July 29th, 2019

checkmark-greenAugust is “late summer,” but it never seems like that to me. As an HVAC blogging dog, I know that the “serious summer” is during August and through September because this is when our team here at Russell & Abbott is the busiest fielding those important customer AC repair calls. It’s not just that it’s really hot this time of year. It’s that air conditioners have already done plenty of hard work in the early parts of the summer, so when the heat ramps up in August, they may be too worn down already.

I know I mention this a lot, but I want to sneak in another shout-out to our regular maintenance program, The Comfort Club. There’s no better way to prepare your air conditioning system for a long summer and a hassle-free August and September than through an annual spring visit from one of our team members!

Olive’s Tips for Making the Most of the End of Summer With Your AC

Monday, September 10th, 2018

dont-forget-post-itSeptember always sounds like it’s the fall. The summer months are June, July, and August, after all. But summer doesn’t officially end until the third week of September—and it’s not like the weather pays much attention to actual calendar dates anyway. My point is: we’re still enjoying warm and sometimes hot weather here in East Tennessee, and our air conditioning systems are going to keep doing steady post-Labor Day labor.

As a professional HVAC blogger dog, I’ve gotten to know air conditioners well over the last few summers. I have tips on how you can make the most of your AC during its “2018 September Farewell Tour” before it goes off on fall and winter vacation. Follow this advice to help the air conditioner system stay in good shape and keep your utility bills under control.

Your Air Conditioning Warranty: Give It a Close Look

Monday, April 9th, 2018

onyx_logoA warranty is a warranty, right? It’s there to protect you if something goes wrong with your equipment from something that wasn’t your fault, like a manufacturing defect. So it’s not much more tricky than that … right?

Ah, my dear readers, it’s never that simple! Not all warranties are the same, and not all warranties are equal. When you’re considering a new air conditioning system installation, I recommend you give the warranty a really close look. Like, do a full bloodhound investigation on it. I’ve got a pretty sharp nose like all dogs, but even I have to admit, those bloodhounds are the best when it comes to finding the best. And I got a bloodhound friend of mine named Baskerville to help me out on this post: we looked over the warranties of nine other manufacturers and compared them to the Russell & Abbott Onyx Hardcore warranty. Here’s what we found!

End of the Dog Days of Summer: Time to Think about Fall Maintenance!

Tuesday, August 15th, 2017

dog-sleeping-on-floorWe’re nearing the close of the “Dog Days of Summer.” The moment I started to think about writing my next post, I wondered, “Hey, what does ‘Dog Days of Summer’ even mean?” Most people think it means it’s the time of the year when it grows so hot that dogs lie around lazily panting all the time. However, that didn’t sound right to me—I lay around and pant all year!—so I did some research.

It turns out, I was right. The phrase comes to us from the ancient Greeks. Late July is the period when the constellation group Sirius (The Dog) comes up over the horizon just before dawn. The Greeks referred to these days, usually the hottest of the year, as “dog days” because of Sirius. The phrase made it to English eventually, and people have been making up stories about the meaning ever since.

But the dog days are going to come to an end soon, along with the hot weather, and that means it’s time to start thinking of “The Maintenance Days of Fall!” (There isn’t an HVAC constellation, however, so you’ll just have to go with a normal calendar for this.)

Olive Celebrates Presidents’ Day with Presidential Pets

Tuesday, February 14th, 2017

english-bulldogWe’re coming up on the last of the three major special days celebrated in February. We already passed Groundhog Day (as an HVAC dog I’m a bit wary about other mammals claiming they can predict the weather; I say “Be ready for anything!”). This week is Valentine’s Day. Next up is Presidents’ Day, which is a combined celebration of the birthdays of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. You can read a short history of this holiday, but what I’m really interested in talking about today is Presidential Pets.

Although not every head of our Executive Branch has kept a furry friend in the White House, there have been many animal pals to have taken residence at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

How HVAC Systems Can Help Improve Your Health

Monday, October 17th, 2016

The winter colds are going to be here soon! I can already feel the static electricity that’s making my fur stick to the brush. Heating systems will soon start turning on—and a new set of health problems are going to confront us when the cold sweeps in. Tuning your heating system up is just one step you can take with your HVAC preparation. You can also make some changes to help the HVAC system protect your health during this time when your immune system can be weakened.
