Take Your AC Back to School—Find Out If You Need a New One

Monday, September 9th, 2019

service-checkmarkI’ve gone to dog schools before, and although they usually don’t hand out report cards for canine training, I’m familiar with grading systems. And those grades and report cards are on my mind right now because it’s September and folks are heading back to school. So I came up with this idea … why not take your air conditioning system back to school?

No, I don’t mean to pack the AC into your car and drive it to Maryville High School. You can’t pick up a central AC anyway! What I mean is to give your air conditioning system a report card about its performance during the summer. If your air conditioner did poorly, it either needs repair work, or else it needs to retire. Figuring this out now, as the weather cools down in fall, provides you with a convenient period to arrange to have the AC fixed or replaced.

Watch Out for These AC Scams From Non-Professionals!

Monday, August 26th, 2019

moneyI always want to bring good news to people, because I’m one of those friendly dogs who loves to make folks happy. I’d love nothing better than to tell you all about the specials we offer and the way our team can help you enjoy better cooling in your house.

But I also have to bring bad news at times, because it helps my readers avoid bad news in the future. And the bad news I’ve got today is that not all people who work on air conditioners are as honest or as skilled as the Russell & Abbott team. In fact, there are plenty of non-pros out there who are running scams that aim to part people from their money and leave them with a bad air conditioning system.

I’ve put together a list of some of the scams you might run into. Remember, when you need real professionals who’ll give you honest work done right, just whistle and we’ll come running!

Capacitors and Contactors: Big Deal Electric Parts of Your AC

Monday, August 12th, 2019

electrical-partsBeing an HVAC blogger dog also means knowing plenty about electrical systems. After all, electricity is what powers most home cooling systems. The standard central AC has numerous electrical parts and wires and connections and other doodads. (I know doodad is not exactly a technical term, but I think it gets the idea across.)

I want to talk to you about two electrical “doodads” that are super-duper important parts of your air conditioning system—the capacitors and the contactors. The reasons I’m bringing these ones up is that both wear down over time and may not last as long as an AC, so you may find that you need to have repairs when one of them fails.

Okay, let’s hop into these important electrical parts that keep your AC cooling your home!

My List of the Most Common AC Repair Troubles

Monday, July 29th, 2019

checkmark-greenAugust is “late summer,” but it never seems like that to me. As an HVAC blogging dog, I know that the “serious summer” is during August and through September because this is when our team here at Russell & Abbott is the busiest fielding those important customer AC repair calls. It’s not just that it’s really hot this time of year. It’s that air conditioners have already done plenty of hard work in the early parts of the summer, so when the heat ramps up in August, they may be too worn down already.

I know I mention this a lot, but I want to sneak in another shout-out to our regular maintenance program, The Comfort Club. There’s no better way to prepare your air conditioning system for a long summer and a hassle-free August and September than through an annual spring visit from one of our team members!

Why an Honest Contractor Is So Important for Better Air Conditioning

Monday, July 15th, 2019

Heating and Air RedneckWhen I was writing this post, I was thinking of titling it “Lies My Contractor Told Me.” But I wouldn’t want you, dear readers, to think I meant our team at Russell & Abbott! Honesty is our policy because we know how much it means to customers. We’ve built up a successful business because local homeowners trust us. This honesty isn’t only good business, it’s also being a good neighbor—we’re a part of this community, and we want to do our part to make it a great community.

The contractor I was thinking of when I came up with this list is the other type of contractor. The contractor that makes up stories just to make an extra sale for something a customer doesn’t need and which won’t create better air conditioning! Working with an honest contractor means you won’t hear false advice like this…

I Keep Lowering the Temperature, But My AC Won’t Make the Home Cool Enough!

Monday, June 3rd, 2019

woman-in-front-of-fan-hand-on-headWhen I get too hot, I pant. It’s a simple trick we dogs have done for centuries, and it works pretty well—even with the fur coat. When people get hot, they turn on their air conditioning systems by adjusting the thermostat to a lower temperature.

But what if that didn’t work? The air conditioner is running, but the cool air coming from the vents isn’t overcoming the heat the way it’s supposed to. You lower the thermostat more, but nothing helps. The house is still too hot and stuffy. What’s happening?

Want to Avoid AC Repair This Year? Here’s How to Start!

Monday, April 22nd, 2019

Onyx---Iced-TeaRepairing air conditioners is a big part of what keeps us busy during the summer. Our team is ready to come to your rescue when you’ve got a cooling system that just isn’t doing the “cooling” part.

But we also understand that you’d rather not have to call us for air conditioning repair in Farragut, TN or elsewhere in the first place. It’s much better to prevent repairs ahead of time so you can sail through the summer with one less thing to worry about.

“Okay, Olive, how do I prevent repairs? I don’t know how to tinker with my AC.”

Ah, great point! You don’t want to tinker with your AC no matter what. The only people you want opening up the air conditioner’s cabinets and going in there with tools are licensed HVAC professionals. There are a few things you can do to help your air conditioner run better that don’t require any expert knowledge, such as regularly changing the air filter. However, in this post, I’m going to tell you about the best place to start with repair prevention…

Keeping Your AC from the Junkyard (“What Do You Do With an Old AC?”)

Monday, October 8th, 2018

dumped-ac-units-scrapyardFall, the time when the air is filled with the sounds of people tossing old air conditioners into the scrapheaps, creating a pleasing metal clang

Okay, I’m making that up. However, fall is a time of the year when many homeowners decide to make changes to their HVAC systems, and that often means having the AC replaced. Of course, we would rather you didn’t have to do that, and we’re making it easier than ever with our “Dirty Secret” campaign: we’re offering our 21-Point Energy and Repair Saver System Tune-Up for only $97 for a limited time. That’s a huge savings off the regular price—and you’ll receive the benefit of keeping your AC from ending up sent to the scrapyard too early.

But that brings up an interesting question, one I often hear: “Hey Olive, do you just throw that old air conditioner into the junkyard?” I’m not a “junkyard dog,” but I am an HVAC expert dog, so I can tell you … the short answer is, “no.” The long answer is interesting, if you’d care to hang with me…

Fall Is the Right Time to Upgrade Your Air Conditioning System

Sunday, September 23rd, 2018

onyx-unitI just stuck my sensitive canine nose out the door to test the weather. Yep, it’s still pretty warm out there. But my nose can also sense the approaching change in the weather. It might not be obvious to your human noses yet, but you’ll soon see that change in color in the leaves. (I don’t have the best color vision, but my spectacular sense of smell and hearing really make up for it!)

So what’s this mean for your air conditioning, you want to know? I mean, if it’s soon going to cool down out here, why worry about it? First, it’s important to remember that AC repair in Knoxville, TN is still important as long as you’re running the AC. Second, we’ve got an offer at Russell & Abbott that makes this fall a fantastic time to upgrade your old AC system to something great.
