Your home’s air conditioner has a long, hot season of work ahead of it. You want to make sure that it isn’t suffering from a malfunction before the weather gets any warmer; the last thing you want during one of the hottest days of the year is to be stuck with an AC that won’t do its job. One of the best ways to prepare your air conditioner for the season is with a maintenance visit from a professional. But even after maintenance is finished, you need to keep a watch for any indications that the AC is struggling.
Unusual sounds coming from a cooling system are one of the major warning signs to call a professional for air conditioning repairs. Here are three of the more common of these warning signs that you may encounter:
1 – Clicking
If you hear a clicking sound when your air conditioner starts up, it probably means that one of the capacitors (the components that transfer electrical power to the motors) is dying and needs replacement. Don’t try to replace a capacitor yourself; call for professional to look into the sound and find out what needs to be done.
2 – Hissing
A sound like high-pressure gas escaping from a line is likely exactly that: refrigerant gas leaking from small holes in the copper lines that carry it. Loss of refrigerant in an air conditioner is a major issue that will not only reduce the cooling power of the system but could also cause catastrophic damage to the compressor. Repair technicians will locate the leaks, seal them, and then recharge the refrigerant to its proper level.
3 – Screeching/grinding
These mechanical noises are probably coming from the motors. If the motors start to wear down or become dirty, they will begin to overwork. Unless repaired soon, they will burn out and need to have professionals replace them.
